This website redesign encompasses deploying a WordPress content management system for this non-profit charitable organization. Previously, the design platform utilized the Go Daddy website builder.
Must Haves
WordPress offers many theme options, as well as other development tools. With the appropriate website design choices, the site reflects a more contemporary and modern look. However, the Club wished to include more event and member photographs instead of generic stock images. The Club President and board members requested an easy-to-navigate site, especially for International members.
Improvement
One can move through the site by using the left sidebar. The scrolling Home page offers sections explaining membership, functions, and benefits of the Club. In addition, Call-to-Action (CTA) buttons are prevalent throughout the site to help direct the user to the appropriate information. Animations catch the user’s attention, strategically placed and not overdone. The footer includes two child menus. The website features include online and downloadable forms, payment options, upcoming events—links to supported charitable events, social media links, and a monthly newsletter in a flip-book format.
I drew inspiration for the redesign from the many photos of club events, especially the colorful flair from the annual International Showcase.
Development.
Google Analytics assisted in providing adequate Search Engine Optimization for the site. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is approx. 91% proficient in Google Search. The Go Daddy C-Panel allows for additional website metrics.
The site includes a privacy policy and SSL certificate for encrypting personal information sent over the Internet. Website accessibility was evaluated to acceptable standards using WAVE powered by WebAIM. For optimal design, user testing continually provides evaluations for any needed changes.
Take Aways
Keeping a website updated provides security and reduces the chance hackers could maliciously infiltrate the site.
In addition, maintaining current and thorough backups of the site data is extremely important. These files prove invaluable if, for some reason, the site becomes compromised. Recommendations include keeping a complete backup offline and preferably on a removable device.
